Wart Causes and Treatment Options

Our doctors at Shady Grove Dermatology in Rockville, MD, can decrease or eliminate many skin issues, but few treatments are instantaneous or immediate. Treatments take time to eliminate specific skin issues like these growths permanently.

These benign growths are harmless but annoying; you want them gone as quickly as possible. They appear primarily on the hands, feet, fingers, toes, and knees and come from various forms of the Human Papilloma Virus. The following describe possible warts.

  • Harmless, Noncancerous
  • Painless
  • Flat/Smooth
  • Dome-Shaped
  • Cauliflower Design
  • Lighter or Darker Surrounding Skin
  • Occurs at all ages
  • Spread from person to person
  • Takes time to eliminate
  • Presents as one or in a cluster

There are different forms of warts.

Filiform Warts

This wart targets the eyelids, lips, face, and neck.

Common Warts

These form anywhere on the body, especially fingers, toes, and knees.

Flat Warts

These form on the face and forehead, especially among children and teens.

Genital Warts

These form around the genitals and pubic areas, vagina, anus, or in the mouth. They are incredibly contagious and sexually transmitted.

Plantar Warts

These form on the soles of your feet and are painful. They spread rapidly.

Periungual Warts

These form around the fingernails or toenails that interfere with healthy-looking nails.

The treatment of warts depends on the type and location. While some of these types respond to over-the-counter medicine, many require doctor-supervised treatment. The following are various forms of treatment.

Cryotherapy

Liquid nitrogen or nitrous oxide freezes off the wart.

Electrosurgery

An electric current is sent through the wart by our doctor. This treatment kills off the cells.

Laser Surgery

The doctor heats the wart's cells until the tissues die and the wart falls away.

Freezing Products

Patients can purchase freezing products via an aerosol without a prescription.

Acid Preparations

These products come in plasters, drops, pads, or gels. They slowly dissolve the wart tissue, which takes four to six weeks to show successful wart removal.
